Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary is located at outskirt of Darjeeling around 10-15 km from main town. It is one of the oldest wildlife sanctuaries of India and covers an area of 38.6 km2. The elevation of the Sanctuary ranges from 1,500 to 2,600 m (4,900 to 8,500 ft). It provides habitat for barking deer, wild boar, Himalayan black bear, Indian leopard, jungle cat, rhesus monkey, Assam macaque, Himalayan flying squirrel. The sanctuary also has a rich variety of birds. The sanctuary consists of compactly blended natural and man-made forests. The forest has different kinds of trees and plantation including oak, pines and birch. The sanctuary opened the country's first-ever cycle trail, which is a 20-km stretch weaving through thick pine forests.
By Air: Bagdogra Airport is the nearest airport to Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary. One must take a taxi to reach the sanctuary from here. Alternately, one could take a bus to reach Darjeeling and then take a jeep to reach the sanctuary
By Rail: New Jalpaiguri Railway Junction is 75 km away from the Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary and is the closest railhead to the sanctuary. An alternate option is to get down at the Ghoom Railway station. It is 2 km away from the sanctuary
By Road: There are 2 routes to reach Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary from Siliguri.
