West Bengal
The headquarters of the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission are located on the western bank of the Hooghly River at Belur in Howrah district. Spread over 40 acres of land, these organizations were brought into existence by Sri Ramakrishna (1836-1886), a great 19th-century saint of Bengal, who is regarded as the prophet of the modern age, and his chief disciple, Swami Vivekananda (1863-1902), one of the most prominent thinkers and religious leaders of the present age, regarded as 'one of the chief architects of the modern world'. It is a place of pilgrimage for people of different religions and faiths from all over the world. They are engaged in a variety of humanitarian, social service activities and serve millions of men, women and children without any discrimination of caste, religion or race.
The serene campus of Belur Math on the Ganges includes temples dedicated to Sri Ramakrishna, Sri Sarada Devi and Swami Vivekananda. The Holy Mother Sarada Devi visited this place several times. The room where Swami Vivekananda took Mahasamadhi has been preserved and his Samadhi is also inside the monastery.
