Ghoom Monastery

Ghoom is a quaint hill town about 6 kms from Darjeeling. This town is popular for the multiple Buddhist monasteries amidst the mountainous terrain. These monasteries offer a beautiful escape to serenity and peace with the Himalayas at the backdrop. The Yiga Choeling Tibetan Monastery near Tiger Hill is one of the famous monasteries of the town popularly known as Ghoom Monastery. Built in 1850, the outer structure of the monastery was constructed by Sokpo Sherab Gyatso who is a famous monk and Mongolian astrologer.

The 4.57 meters statue of the Maithreya Buddha, painted in gold and encrusted with precious stone is the major attraction of this Monastery. Largest amongst the three monasteries in Ghoom, this is a revered place for Buddhist community and is the store house of some rare Buddhist manuscripts. This monastery also restores Tibetan translation of some famous Sanskrit works. This monastery is well connected with major cities like Kalimpong, Darjeeling, Kurseong and Siliguri. The calm ambience of this place makes it a major destination for all groups of visitors specially the tourists with spiritual bent of mind.

By Air: The nearest airport to Darjeeling is Bagdogra. There are direct flight connections with Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati, and other major cities of India. Tourists heading for Darjeeling can get direct taxis/cabs to Darjeeling from Bagdogra or one can head towards Siliguri first and get a transport there. There are several transport facilities available from Siliguri.

By Train: Apart from Darjeeling Railway Station the two closest railway stations are Siliguri and New Jalpaiguri. These railway stations have direct railway connections with Kolkata, Delhi, Guwahati, Varanasi, and other major cities of India.

By Road: The major access to Darjeeling by road is via Siliguri, which is connected to all the major cities of India.
