It is one of the unique places to visit in Kolkata where one can discover the core of Indian culture, right from the artistic works of the artisans. It not only manufactures clay idols for various festivals in Kolkata and its neighborhood, but also regularly exports them. There is a huge demand for Kumortuli innovative artwork as its list of supply markets is constantly widening throughout the globe. It’s magical to watch master craftsmen conjure the deities one by one. Though Kumortuli has been in existence since the inception of the eastern metropolis, its fame as the world idol market gained prominence in the era of Sarbojonin Durgotsav or community Durga Puja. In addition, during Durga Puja Kumortuli boasts of its own Puja, which is one of the oldest Durga Pujas in Kolkata.
It's easiest to take a taxi (it will take around 30 minutes from central Kolkata) to Kumartuli. Otherwise, buses and trains go there. The nearest metro station is the Sovabazar Metro. Sovabazar Launch Ghat (alongside the Ganges river) is also close by. Taking a walk to the riverbank is worthwhile, can see old Gothic and Victorian style mansions. From there visitor can get a boat back to central Kolkata.
