Overview
Midnapore was divided into Paschim Medinipur and Purba Medinipur on January 1, 2002. Both Paschim and Purba Medinipur have a rich blend of cultural diversities because of its tribal and non-tribal communities. Different festivals like Baha, Sohorai, Bhadu and Tusu are celebrated with great vigor in this region. Glove puppetry or Beni Putul Naach is still a tradition in the village of Padmatamil in Paschim Medinipur. Patachitra scroll paintings, cane and bamboo basketry, terracotta pottery, Masland mat weaving and dokra art are some of the well-known art forms from this region.

By Train: It has its own Railway Station named as Midnapore Railway Station which is well connected to all the major cities of West Bengal

Patachitra scroll paintings, an ancient folk art, is a well-known art form in Purba and Paschim Medinipur. It’s a beautiful combination of performance and craft, making it popular as a visual art. In this art form, the Patuas, the artists paint mythological stories on the frames of long scrolls and present the stories through their songs. National and international art researchers and artists have acclaimed this as one of the most interesting style of paintings. Through this art form, diverse recent story themes on tribal people, climate change, gender diversity are now being portrayed.

Putul nach is folk dance originated in the state of West Bengal. It is performed with the large puppets and dolls made up of wood and cloth, operated by a group of people who are concealed behind them. The puppets are moved as per the rhythm of music , creating a vibrant and lively spectacle. It is generally performed during festival or celebrations.
