St. James Church is one of Kolkata’s most elegant churches. Built in 1862, the twin spires of the St. James Church dominate Kolkata’s skyline. It is popularly known as Jora Girja which literally means twin church for its twin spires. The present Church was built to replace an older one of the same name, which was situated in Nebutolla Lane, near Amherst Street. The earlier Church was built following the style and plan of St. Thomas Church of Free School Street. The foundation stone of the new Church was laid on 7 June 1862, by the Honorable John Peter Grant, acting Lieutenant-Governor of Bengal, at the south-east corner of the foundations. On both sides of the Nave, there are five pointed arches opening to the Ambulatories, situated on the outer sides.
