Overview
Sundarbans ecosystem is a unique natural wonder of South Asia and the globe. The delta is spread over India and Bangladesh with an area of approximately 10,000 sq kms and is enjoying the status of being largest halophytic mangrove forest in the world.
It is a delta of the two great Indian River - The Ganga and The Brahmaputra which converges on the Bengal basin. The entire Sundarban area was declared a Biosphere Reserve four years later. Tiger, fishing cat, spotted Deer, wild boar, gangetic dolphin, water monitor, estuarian crocodile, river terrapin, olive ridley turtle, ground turtle, hawks bill turtle, king crab, etc. seen in this area. The tourists can explore this beautiful mangrove forest in boat safaris over a 2/3 days trip from Kolkata.

WBTDCL, under the Tourism Department conducts two types of packages tours every year from the months of November-March. Tourists are taken to locations such as Sonakhali, Sudhyankhali, Sajnekhali, Dobanki, Buridabri, Jhingekhali etc. A boat ride in the backwaters Sunderbans can be the most mystic voyages in India. One can experience the wildlife and a close watch to village life.
By Air: The nearest airport is the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Airport at Kolkata. From there one can take road journey and after that boat ride to reach Sundarbans.
By Train: Local trains to Canning are available from Sealdah South at regular intervals. Local shared vans are available from Canning to Godhkhali Jetty, the starting point of boat journey to the Sundarbans.
By Road: Sundarbans is well connected with Kolkata. Road transportation is also available from Kolkata for Namkhana, Sonakhali, Raidighi, Canning, and Najat, which are all near the Sundarbans and have access to the riverine waterways. India Beacons arranges vehicles as part of their package tours to pick and drop tourists from Kolkata to Godhkhali Jetty, the starting point of the boat journey to the Sundarbans.

Located on the western edge of the Sundarban, Henry s Island also known as Bakkhali is fast developing into West Bengal s favorite Beach Resort. Henrys Island is named after a European who surveyed land in the area in the late 19th century. Henrys Island is one of the numerous island that form the Ganga Brahmaputra delta, the largest in the world. Crisscrossed by numerous rivers and rivulets Henry s island offer an interesting mix of beach and mangrove forest. A place, where tourist can laze on the beach and spot wildlife simultaneously. Tourist can get a spectacular view from the watch tower in Bakkhali. The walk goes through a stretch of mangrove jungle accessed by crossing a small bamboo bridge.

Sajnekhali Watch Tower is counted among the most renowned watch towers in the park. It s popular amongst tourist due to its proximity to several resorts in the Sundarban area. This place also serves as the head office of the forest department. Tourist can obtain permission to enter the national park from the watch tower spot. The watch tower can accommodate 20 people at a time. The major attractions in this region are Bono Bini Temple, Mangrove Interpretation Center, and the tourist lodge of the Bengal Tourism Department. This watch tower makes exploring the wilderness super fun and easy. The bird lovers get a special spectacle of avifauna species such as Pelican, Kingfishers, Plovers, Lap Wings, White Bellied Sea Eagle, Whimbrel, Curfews, and Sandpipers.

This watch Tower in the Burirdabri camp is famous for its watchtower, mud walks and mangrove cage trail leading to a viewpoint known as Raimongal Viewpoint. The ground fauna consisting of snails, varieties of crabs and mollusks can be observed closely during the mud walk. The layout of this watchtower is very beautiful with a walk over wooden bridges followed by a walk through the mud cage and finally ending at the wooden watch tower overlooking Bangladesh with the river Raimongal forming the international boundary between India and Bangladesh. One can see the Bangladesh Sundarbans from this watchtower. This watchtower has a capacity to host 10 persons at a time.

This is another watchtower in the series of several watch towers and is associated with the legend of Behula and Lakhindari. Today this watchtower offers a splendid view of the ruins of a 400-year-old Shiva Temple. It is also believed that there is a road on the extreme right of the forest which was built by King Pratapaditya to guard the coastal area. It is now covered with earth. There is also a sweet water pond nearby for tourist to explore.

Kalash Island, in South 24 Parganas, is a part of the Sundarbans National Park that lies at the estuary of the river Matla. Being close to the core area of Sundarbans, visitors with armed guards are permitted to get down on the beach. The royal Bengal tigers often come here to drink sweet water from a pond near the camp. During winters, it is the breeding ground of the Olive Ridley Turtles that arrive in great numbers on this beach for nesting. Kalash Island is also the home to many varieties of coastal birds and is specially a good place to spot uncommon waders.

Bakkhali is a seaside hamlet in the South 24 Parganas district of the state of West Bengal, this hamlet has a white sand beach which stretches for about 8 kilometers from Bakkhali to Fraserganj. Bakkhali is the perfect destination for nature lovers who want to spend time in peace, serene and quiet place. It is situated on one of the galore deltaic islands spread across southern Bengal. Most of the islands are part of the Sundarbans, barring a few at the fringes. Tourist attractions in Bakkhali are Bakkhali Watch Tower, Bhagabatpur Crocodile Project in Sundarbans, Sagar Island, Jambu Dwip and Fraserganj. The best season or months to visit places in Bakkhali are February, March, October, November, and December.

Sudhanyakhali Watch tower is the perfect place from where a wildlife enthusiast can spot a tiger. The watch tower can hold 25 people at a time. There is a pond having sweet water behind the watch tower. Wild animals use to come and drink water at this point. There is vast grassland behind the pond which endows an invigorating site of the wilds. Other than the tigers, one can also spot other wildlife species such as crocodiles, wild boars, and axis deer.
