The main attraction of Tarakeswar village in Hooghly district is the Tarakanath Temple dedicated to Lord Tarakanath, a form of Lord Shiva. Built in the year 1729 by King Bharmala, the temple architecture resembles the temple architecture style of central West Bengal, with features like Achala and Natmandir. The temple has four roofs over the sanctum sanctorum and extended galleries for the congregation of devotees. The Dudhpukur water pool is located to the north of the temple and is considered a holy pool. People take a dip in the Dudhpukur water pool to attain salvation.
The Tarakanath Temple is considered one of the 12 abodes or Jyotirlinga temples of Lord Shiva in India. The temple also has smaller temples dedicated to Goddess Kali and Lord Lakshmi-Narayan. A large number of devotees visit this temple to worship Lord Shiva on auspicious occasions like Shravan month, Mahashivratri, Chaitra Sankranti, Gajanan and Neel Puja.
